One Year Since the Mauao Mana Moana PROTEST

12 months ago today (15th June 2018), the people of Tauranga Moana lead by Ngāi te Rangi and Mana Moana, took to the harbour to protest the actions of the Crown in granting Mana Whenua recognition to outside iwi.

That day was significant for a number of reasons;

It was the first time since the battles of Te Ranga and Pukehinahina, that Ngāi te Rangi people had combined to act in unison to protest Crown actions

It was also the first time that any iwi had staged a water-borne protest that effectively closed a major port for a day.

Charlie Tawhiao stated that "We will never concede our Rangatiratanga as mana whenua and ahi kaa in Tauranga Moana"

Ngāi te Rangi is still actively protesting to encourage Minister of Treaty Settlements, Andrew Little to apply the Tikanga process in all aspects of cross-claiming. They claim that this absolutely needs to be done prior to the signing of Hauraki Collective's claims.
